These are tumultuous times for our democracy. Across the spectrum, at home and abroad, commentators and citizens are worried about the future of the American republic.

Few writers have better chronicled how we got here over the last couple of decades than George Packer, whose work regularly appears in The New Yorker and The Atlantic.

Over four lively discussions, this group will use Packer’s work to consider American democracy and our role in the world. We’ll read four of his books as well as long-form magazine articles. Each conversation will be lead by Mercantile member John Juech, an avid reader and believer in American democracy.

This is a HYBRID discussion series. Registrants will have the option of attending either in person or via Zoom.

Please purchase tickets for the entire series on the March 2 event listing.

The reading schedule is:

  • March: The Village of Waiting
  • June: The Unwinding
  • September: Our Man
  • December: Last Best Hope
