Journalism professor and former newspaper journalist Margot Susca joins us to read from & discuss her book, Hedged: How Private Investment Funds Helped Destroy American Newspapers and Undermine Democracy
Hedged tells the untold history of an American catastrophe by examining the last 20 years of American chain newspaper ownership and investment and the ultimate neglect of their audiences.

About Margot Susca
Margot Susca, Ph.D. is the inaugural assistant professor of Journalism, Accountability and Democracy in the School of Communication at American University in Washington, D.C. Margot blends critical communication scholarship with traditional watchdog reporting methods to research media ownership and its impacts on democracy. Hedged is her first book.
Her professional experiences inform her work as a mentor, scholar, and teacher. Before earning a doctorate in mass communication from Florida State University in 2012, Margot worked as a newspaper reporter in Connecticut and Florida. Margot serves as associate editor at the nonprofit Investigative Reporting Workshop and as an assessor with the International Fact Check Network. She won in 2022 the Outstanding Teaching Award given annually to a full-time faculty member in a tenure line position. She teaches courses in reporting, mass media and society, and journalism ethics.
She has a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University and an undergraduate degree in journalism and political science from UMass Amherst. She lives on Capitol Hill with her 13-year-old daughter.
